Statement of Belief

The following is the formal doctrinal position of the Islamic Knowledge Foundation, drawn from the creedal texts of the Ashʿarī and Māturīdī schools of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamāʿah.

I. Belief in Allāh

We believe that Allāh exists. His existence has no beginning and no end. He is One, without partner, without associate, and without equal. He is not a body, not a substance, not a form, and not a composite. He is not in a place, and no direction contains Him. He existed before place and time were created, and He is now as He was.

He does not resemble anything in creation, and nothing in creation resembles Him.

We believe that Allāh is eternal without beginning and everlasting without end. He is Self-Subsisting, in need of nothing. He is attributed with Life, Knowledge, Power, Will, Hearing, Sight, and Speech, and with all attributes of perfection. These attributes are real and eternal, neither identical to His Being nor separate from it. We affirm what He has affirmed of Himself and we negate every attribute of imperfection and every likeness to created things.

II. Belief in the Angels

We believe in the Angels of Allāh. They were created from light. They are honourable slaves of Allāh who do not disobey Him in what He commands them and who carry out whatever they are commanded. Their number is known only to Allāh. Among them are Jibrīl, Mīkāʾīl, Isrāfīl, and ʿAzrāʾīl, upon them be peace, and we believe in all of them.

III. Belief in the Revealed Books

We believe that Allāh revealed Books to His Prophets and Messengers as guidance for humanity. Among them are the Tawrāh revealed to Mūsā, the Injīl revealed to ʿĪsā, and the Zabūr revealed to Dāwūd, upon them all be peace. The final revelation is the Qurʾān, revealed to the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ. The Qurʾān will remain preserved without alteration until the Last Day.

IV. Belief in the Prophets and Messengers

We believe that Allāh sent Prophets and Messengers to guide humanity from its first generation to its last. They were truthful in everything they conveyed, protected from sin, and the finest of all of Allāh’s creation. The first of the Prophets was Ādam, upon him be peace. The last and the seal of all Prophets and Messengers is Muḥammad ibn ʿAbdillāh ﷺ. There is no Prophet after him, and his Sharīʿah remains until the Last Day.

We believe that Muḥammad ﷺ is the Messenger of Allāh, His chosen slave, the master of all the Prophets and Messengers, and the highest in status to the Lord of the Worlds. Belief in him and in the totality of what he brought is obligatory upon every person of sound mind and age.

V. Belief in the Last Day

We believe in the Last Day and in all that the Prophet ﷺ has informed us it contains. We believe in the questioning of the grave by the two Angels Munkar and Nakīr, in the punishment of the grave and its comfort, in the Resurrection, the Assembly before Allāh, the Reckoning, the Balance on which deeds are weighed, the Bridge over Hellfire, the intercession of the Prophet ﷺ for the people of his community, Paradise, and Hellfire. All of this is established by the Book of Allāh, the Sunnah of His Messenger ﷺ, and the consensus of the scholars of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamāʿah.

VI. Belief in Destiny

We believe in destiny: its good and its evil, its sweetness and its bitterness, all of it from Allāh — exalted is He. Allāh destined all things before their occurrence. Nothing comes into existence except by His will, His power, and His creation. The believer accepts what is good in the decree of Allāh and disapproves of what is evil, while remaining certain that Allāh’s judgment is just and His wisdom is complete.
