THE TORTURE IN THE GRAVE AND THE ENJOYMENT THEREIN

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, to Him belong the endowments and proper commendations. May Allah increase the honor of Prophet Muhammad, sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam, raise his rank, and protect his nation from what he fears for it.

Thereafter, it was said:

It is an obligation to know that some of the people are enjoying in their graves and others are tortured in their graves. Allah said in al-Quran which means:

The one who does not believe in what I revealed, he will face a severe life and in the Hereafter, on the Day of Judgment, he will be similar to a blind person.

In this life, many blasphemers are not living a tough life, and the verse tells us that this severity happens before the Day of Judgment. This is in the grave, as the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم made it clear.

When the person dies, after he is buried, the soul comes back to his body. So he is again aware, by soul and by body. Two angels come to him; one is called Munkar and the other one is called Nakir; and they are terrifying. Their color is dark navy. They ask him, “What did you say about this man Muhammad صلى الله عليه و سلم?” If this person (being questioned) was a believer, Allah strengthens his heart; and he easily says, “I use to say that he is the Messenger of Allah. I bear witness that there is no God but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.” The Angels then tell him, “We knew that this is your case”. Then his grave would be widened 70 cubits by 70 cubits; some people, would have it widened even more than that and it would be filled with light, similar to the full moonlight. Then they will tell him:

Sleep like the groom who is to be waken, only by his most beloved wife.

After that, he remains in enjoyments; he does not experience any torture. Of course, this is the pious believer.

As for the believers who committed enormous sins and they did not repent, some of them would be forgiven and will be given enjoyment in their graves. Others will not be forgiven and they will be tortured in their graves; but less than the torture of the blasphemer. For a certain period and after that, the torture would cease and then later, on the Day of Judgment, either Allah forgives them or tortures them. Allah forgives one group and tortures another group.

In some hadith narrated from the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم, it is mentioned that the believer, who is tortured in the grave, will be tortured for 7 days in the grave. Shaykh ^Abdullah told us:

In the vicinity of Harar, there was a man who was an unjust, yet powerful Muslim. He cooperated with some non-Muslims in the area and had power at the time. He used to make deals with people with ar-Riba; and out of his injustice, to show you to which extent he went — one time he was walking and he saw a female. He liked her so he took her. She was married and her husband couldn’t prevent him from doing that because her husband was a weak person. This unjust person later died. After he was buried, the people saw the smoke coming out from his grave. So his family went to some shaykhs and asked what to do. They told them to go to the people, whom this person did injustice to, and ask them to forgive him. So they asked some people to recite al-Quran next to his grave and they started to go from one person to another, asking them to forgive him. Still, the smoke continued to come out of his grave for 7 days. After 7 days, it stopped.

This happened to a Muslim, but he was a sinful Muslim. May Allah protect us. Ameen.

As for the blasphemer, when the angels come to him and ask him, he would say, “I don’t know.” He would say, “I heard the people saying something and I would say as they said.” When he says that, the angels insult him and then they hit him with a hammer on his head. If a mountain is hit by this hammer, it would disintegrate. The tortured person screams but we don’t hear their screaming. We, humans and jinn, don’t hear their screaming. Allah did not enable us to hear their screaming when they are hit with this hammer. The animals hear though. Then their graves become tight on them to a point that their ribs criss-cross and they will remain tortured and tortured forever.

After the person’s body decays1; the soul of the pious believer is in Paradise; the soul of the blasphemer is in Sijjin2; and the soul of the sinful believer is in between the earth and the sky; and some in the first sky.

And Allah Knows Best.

May Allah make us among the pious believers. Ameen.

1 The bodies of the Prophets and the Martyrs of Battle do not decay.  Also, the bodies of some of the ‘Awliyaa (Highly Righteous Muslims) do not decay.

2 The Sijjin is a place in the 7th earth. The souls of the blasphemers will be tortured there after their bodies decay. They will be tortured there until the Day of Judgment, on which they will face even more torture.
